What The New Generation Looks For In A Home
Wants and needs change over the years as we can see a few different priorities as to what a millennial wants in their home. As we are aware, the millennials have grown up surrounded by technology and connectivity. They want to be connected at all times and be able to control things via technology. Back in the 1900’s all people wanted was appliances that worked properly- such as a microwave, stove, fridge, etc. Now the millennials want lights that can be turned on and off with their cell phones and blinds that can be opened and closed via their technology too.
As you can see, many people from the new generation wanted new appliances for their first home. This might include a fridge that tells you what groceries you need, that is connected through WIFI, or some could opt for an appealing fridge that is stainless steel. Everyone wants a large master bedroom and this ‘want’ has not really changed much over the years. A 2-car garage is the main necessity most millennials opt for, which is doable and makes sense depending on where in the world you live. If you live in a Country with snow- I can understand this desire.
Energy storage is becoming more popular as we are slowly switching to help reduce the energy we use. This is a great route for the younger generation to head towards, as it is better for our environment. A luxury kitchen and stone flooring is another big necessity that the new generation would like because it looks ‘luxurious’. They want the best of the best, especially when they host their friends and family over for dinner. Who doesn’t want a large kitchen to entertain in?
A finished basement is usually a must for the new generation, as they don’t seem to be as hands-on and depend more on technology. This will make their lives easier and more efficient. The location is a big factor when it comes to their wants and needs in a home. They want to be in the best location possible, even if it costs extra. They need to be surrounded by everything in close proximity to their place. This makes sense but depending on his or her financial situation- it is not always possible for everyone. Location is a key factor for many people, not just the new generation when it comes to finding the perfect place. Nobody wants to be in a location that they do not prefer; life is too short to not enjoy your home. Being in the location of your choice plays a part in your health. Studies show that if you are commuting for hours each day, this increases stress. If you buy a place where you do not have to commute, you won’t have as big of a problem in that area.
Of course, a smart home system as I mentioned earlier on in the article, is very important to some people in the new generation. People want to minimize work nowadays and do things the ‘smart’ way. Why get up and open your blinds or turn on your lights when you can tell your phone to do it for you. Why go through your fridge and cupboards to see what you need, when your list can be updated from your fridge and sent to your phone? Why not have everything on a timer so you do not have to adjust your heat at night or in the morning- it will already know what temperature you want it at? It’s very smart and efficient to design a home like this, but it is also costly. Again, one's financial situation will determine how smart their home can be.
